Privacy Policy
Introduction:
protecting the personal information we hold.
This
document explains the type of personal information that we
collect and use for the purpose of improving the health of
individuals and populations. It also provides some information
about your privacy rights along with our general rights and
obligations. For more detailed information on the Act contact
the Office of the Federal Privacy Commissioner by visiting the
website at www.privacy.gov.au
or calling 1300 363 992.
The
Prince of Wales Medical Research Institute complies with
the NHMRC’s National Statement on Ethical Conduct in
Research Involving Humans; NHMRC’s Australian Code of
Practice for the Care and Use of Animals for Scientific Purposes; The Human
Tissue Act 1983; Human Tissue Amendment Bill 2001; and Anatomy
Act 1977.
The
Privacy Amendment (Private Sector) Act 2000 updates the
Privacy Act of 1988 and came into effect on 21st
December 2001. The amendment governs the way in which
organisations collect, use, keep secure, disclose and dispose
of an individual’s personal information. It gives
individuals the right to know what information an organisation
holds about them and, understandably, a right to have it
corrected if they believe it is wrong.
The
Prince of Wales Medical Research Institute (POWMRI) values and
respects the privacy of all individuals and organisations
seeking to donate time, money or resources to our organisation
and is committed to protecting the personal information we
hold.
Information
Collected
Donors
and Supporters
The Prince of Wales Medical Research Institute gathers
information from donors and supporters to enable the Institute
to send tax deductible receipts, newsletters, invitations to
events and other Institute information. The Institute uses
information that has been provided, such as donors and
supporters name, address, phone number, email address and
payment details. Information on the donor history is also
recorded, such as the amount donated, date it was received,
method of payment and receipt number. The personal information
is stored in a Donor Management database accessible only by
authorized staff. The information on the Donor Management
database is used only for fundraising purposes and to ensure
that donors and supporters are informed about what is
happening at the Institute. The information is not passed on
to any other party.
Research
project and patient information
All
research projects undertaken by researchers at the Prince of
Wales Medical Research Institute have been approved by one or
more NSW ethics committee(s). Researchers undertaking those
projects then obtain patient consent to collect any personal
information such as patient name and contact details as well
as any health information that may be required for the
research project.
Brain
Bank
The
Prince of Wales Medical Research Institute has an extensive
brain bank. Brains of patients with brain diseases such as
Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and
cerebrovascular disease are donated to the Institute by
patients suffering a brain illness, or by their senior
responsible next of kin, for the purposes of neuropathological
research. Normal tissue from people with no history of brain
illness are also donated to the Institute for comparison.
Consent is obtained before any tissue or personal information
such as name, gender, age and clinical information is
collected from such donors.
Results
of physical examinations and samples for research projects are
de-identified by the removal of names and the use of an
identity number in its place. This information is entered into
computer data files using the identity number. The
computerized information is stored on a secure network with
only authorized personnel having password access.
Security
Electronic data is stored on a secure network within the
Institute. All data is password protected and only accessible
by authorized personnel. Paper records are stored in locked
filing cabinets in secure areas within the Institute with only
authorized personnel having access to those records.
Is

The
Prince of Wales Medical Research Institute does not sell or
